Ever Wondered about the Importance of Landscaping in Hospitals?
In the UK, PFI (Private Finance Initiative) has generated a renewed interest in hospital design arena. It effectively provides us an opportunity to consider the hospitals as Therapeutic Environments. Hospital design managers like me, believe that expert knowledge has encouraged the development of hospitals that provide settings for promoting patient recovery, healing and well being.
One of the most essential reasons to landscape the area surrounding a hospital or a clinic is for aesthetics. This not only promotes wellness for patients but makes for a pleasant environment for the staff and visitors alike. Trees provide clean air in addition to other benefits like providing shade and offering a soothing relief to tired eyes.
But landscaping does a lot more than cater for aesthetics. It can be used to counter the negative effects of the environment such as use of trees will help reduce the cold winds in winter and provide the much needed shade and cooler environment in the summer. It might not be out of place to stress the contribution of deforestation towards global warming. NGOs like Green Peace are playing an admirable role to highlight this alarming change in world weather.
Carefully planned landscaping around a hospital helps to route foot traffic, promotes wildlife, contributes to cleaner air and adds value to property.
